Marine Pollution Regulations

Due to concerns about sewage discharge from ships affecting the Whangārei Harbour, the Northland Regional Council seeks confirmation that visiting vessels comply with the Resource Management (Marine Pollution) Amendment Regulations 2022.

Port & Emergency Information

For Ships Master

This is a Customs Controlled Area. The port operates at LEVEL 1 SECURITY. On arrival at the Pilot station ships receive a copy of the Instructions to Masters and Emergency Information.

Harbourmaster Guidelines

Safety of all vessels on the harbour

These guidelines provide advice to vessels transiting the harbour and anchoring in Bream Bay. They include, procedures to be followed when a single pilot is managing both an inbound and outbound vessel.

Use this tool to report maritime events, incidents, or situations to Maritime New Zealand, including those that have caused or could cause serious harm. Submit notifications online. For emergencies, call 111.

Restricted Pedestrian Access

Wharf entry and exit by vehicle only

Pedestrian access from ships to our wharf is prohibited, unless undertaking a draught survey. Entry and exit from the wharf area for crew going ashore is by vehicle only.

Power Limiters

Engine / Shaft

Whangārei Harbour has strong currents and a main channel that requires full power to be available to navigate safely. While in pilotage waters the propulsion system must be available to immediately respond to the full range of manoeuvring commands
