Golden topping for Northland tourism draw-card

Our very own Jon Moore was on hand this morning to witness the 'topping off' of the Hundertwasser Art Centre in Whangarei.

The golden cupola, and the stunning building it sits atop, are set to become another Northland landmark and, it's to be hoped, will put our region even more firmly in the travel and tourism spotlight.

We're delighted to have witnessed today's topping off and look forward to seeing the Centre open its doors after so many years of planning. Kia kaha!

ISL reported 8 logs lost however Log Recovery found & retrieved 8 but unable to recover 1 log in shallow water @ 1 Tree Point. Will try to recover when wind strength has lessened and is not pushing the log towards the shore

Humpbacks in the harbour!

Whangarei-based marine biologist Ingrid Visser alerted us yesterday afternoon to a report of a whale sighting close to the port. We were able to track it down, only to find not one but two – and possibly three - in the harbour. We then alerted all shipping so vessels would take care when maneuvering.

Video footage taken by some boaties nearby confirmed that our visitors were humpback whales, likely on their annual migration north.

How awesome to see them!

Sightings of dolphins, orca and whales can be reported to Ingrid on 0800 SEE ORCA.
