Today we fly the Tino Rangatiratanga flag

February 6, 2022

We take pride and pleasure in dipping the Northport flag today, Waitangi Day 2022, to make room for the Tino Rangatiratanga flag.

The history of the flag has strong connections with local iwi Patuharakeke; co-designer Jan Dobson was from Takahiwai where she now rests in peace.

The website of the Ministry of Culture and Heritage says of the Tino Rangatiratanga flag:“(Its design) was identified through a nationwide consultation process. While it does not carry official status it is a symbol of this land that can complement the New Zealand flag. Flying the two flags together on days of national significance such as Waitangi Day symbolises and enhances the Crown-Māori relationship."

This particular flag was lent to us by local kuia Josephine Pirihi. We are very grateful for this kindness.
